There are two basic types of penalties: those related to a stroke taken (e.g. hitting into a hazard; out of bounds; lost ball; unplayable lie) and technical penalties not associated with a stroke taken (e.g. illegal marking, lifting, or ball substitution; illegal actions related obstructions, impediments).
Stroke-related penalties figure into your strokes gained values, while technical penalties do not.
To record a penalty:
- IMPORTANT: When a stroke results in a penalty, select “Penalty” before entering distance and lie type data. Recording a Penalty always comes first. See Order of Data Entry.
- Select the “Penalty” button at the bottom of the RAR Lie Type section, or type “P” on a keyboard.
- On the Penalty Type Selection Screen (see Penalty Types below), select the type of penalty (or “No Penalty” to exit)
- If the Penalty results in a new lie (e.g. a drop ball is involved), enter the distance and lie type.
When you record a penalty, the type of penalty will be identified as a red text abbreviation on the Scorecard section of RAR, and the next stroke (or strokes) will be filled in with a red bar attributing that stroke (or strokes) to the penalty.
